Have A Good
Oral Hygiene Routine
With metal braces or clear braces, it’s important to make sure that you practice (and keep up with) a healthy oral hygiene routine. Your orthodontic care routine will be a bit more tedious with braces than it was before, but it’s important to take care of your oral health to avoid bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. Check out our page on brushing and flossing with braces to make sure you’re doing everything correctly and using the proper tools. We also recommend using antibacterial mouthwash on a regular basis to keep your breath fresh.
Stay Hydrated!
We all know how important drinking water is to our overall health, but this has a big impact on our oral health too, and helps to prevent bad breath. After eating, swish water around to wash away food that got caught in your teeth and braces. Additionally, drinking plenty of water throughout the day will aid in keeping your teeth clean and your breath fresh. We recommend drinking at least 8 cups of water each day, and more if possible. It’s also important to avoid sugary drinks like juice and soda, as these have been shown to cause cavities and other oral health issues.
Watch
What You’re Eating
Although there are foods to avoid with braces such as popcorn, caramels, gum, corn on the cob, etc., there are also foods to avoid in order to prevent bad breath. Smelly foods like strong cheeses and garlic may negatively impact your breath until they’re digested. Brushing your teeth and rinsing with mouthwash may mask the smell, but it’s best to avoid these foods if bad breath is a big concern.
