As your premier provider of Boerne and Fair Oaks Invisalign and braces, it’s our aim at Boerne Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry to do everything we can to help your child attain a healthy smile. One of the basic fundamentals of achieving a healthy smile lies in the prevention of cavities. To help in this task, our practice offers a variety of preventive dentistry treatments to limit the potential of cavities developing. One of these treatments that you’ll find when you come to visit your kids dentist in Boerne and Fair Oaks is our application of dental sealants.
What Are
Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are small plastic resins that are bonded onto the chewing surfaces of a child’s molars. When a sealant is placed, it will smooth out the surfaces of these molars and make them easier to brush and much more resistant to tooth decay. A sealant will usually provide protection for these teeth for about five years.
How
Dental Sealants Help
As we mentioned, dental sealants are excellent at minimizing the risk of cavities in the molars. You may be wondering why this is though. The reason is because the chewing surfaces of the molars have grooves with plenty of tiny crevices where food particles can get trapped in. Even when a child regularly brushes, flosses, and rinses, there may still be food stuck there. When food is pressed against the tooth enamel for lengthy periods of time, it can lead to cavities. However, by smoothing out these surfaces, there won’t be a problem with food getting trapped against the surfaces of the molars.
Applying a
Dental Sealant
Having a sealant applied is a basic procedure that will just take one visit to your pediatric dentist in Fair Oaks and Boerne. It will follow this process:
- First, your kids dentist in Fair Oaks and Boerne will thoroughly clean and dry your molars to prepare them for the procedure.
- After that, the sealant will then be painted onto the molars. In some cases, the sealants will be bright pink so that the pediatric dentist will be able to make sure that all of the grooves are completely covered. When it dries, it’ll blend back into the tooth’s natural color.
- When all of the intended teeth are coated, the pediatric dentist will either use a blue spectrum natural light to harden the sealant or it’ll be left on its own to harden.
