A water flosser comes highly recommended by our Boerne orthodontist because it’s a great alternative to flossing. Water flossers are very efficient at removing plaque and improving gum health, especially in hard-to-reach places like around braces.

What Is A Water Flosser?

A water flosser is a device comprised of a water reservoir with a pump, a handpiece with a tip on the end of it, and a hose that connects the handle to the tank. The pump takes the water from the reservoir, sends it through the hose and it comes out through the tip as a pressurized stream that’s strong enough to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria off of your teeth.

Is It Safe To Use A Water Flosser With Braces?

Water flossing is definitely safe to use with braces. In fact, it’s recommended. Braces collect plaque very easily and cleaning brackets, wires, and your teeth around them can sometimes be difficult. Enamel decalcification (white spots) on teeth can occur when braces aren’t cleaned properly. Using a water flosser is an effective way to clean everything efficiently and quickly.

Interchangeable Tips For Braces

When looking into purchasing a water flosser, get one with interchangeable tips. There will be an orthodontic tip that looks like a tapered brush that is specifically designed to be used around brackets, which will make cleaning your teeth even easier and more effective.

How To Use A Water Flosser With Braces (Using The Orthodontic Tip)

Using a water flosser is easy and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to clean your entire mouth in about one minute.

To begin, fill the reservoir with lukewarm water and place it on the base. Insert the flosser tip of your choice into the handle. Depending on the specific device you have, you may have to “click” it in place. Adjust the pressure control: typically, a low to medium setting is all you need to get the job done. Lean your head over the sink and place the tip in your mouth. Turn the unit on. To prevent water splashing, slightly open your lips with the unit on and tip in your mouth, and allow the water overflow to fall into the sink below.

Starting with the back teeth, aim the tip at the gumline. Pause and lightly brush the area between the teeth and all around the orthodontic bracket or appliance. You want the stream of water to clean just under the gumlines and between every tooth. Trace your entire mouth both inside and outside of every tooth.

How To Use A Water Flosser With Clear Aligners

When using a water flosser with clear aligners, you can remove the trays from your mouth and use the cleaning device as you would without braces. Use the straight water flosser tip to aim the stream along the gums and between teeth.
